Profile of AFIIA - African Federation of Institutes of Internal Auditors

FORMATION

AFIIA is the federation of institutes of internal auditors in Africa that was formed for the purpose of promoting internal audit profession and representing interests of its members in global fora. AFIIA was founded on 9th May 2009 by leaders of eleven (11) recognised African IIA Institutes in Johannesburg, SA and witnessed by representatives from The IIA Global, IFACI, the World Bank, ECIIA and AFROSAI. During the founding meeting, AFIIA’s Constitution and Logo were adopted, and the first GC elected. AFIIAs’ founding institutes were IIA South Africa, IIA Botswana, IIA Democratic Republic of Congo, IIA Mauritius, IIA Ethiopia, IIA Ghana, IIA Kenya, IIA Malawi, IIA Tanzania, IIA Tunisia and IIA Uganda.

GOVERNANCE STRUCTURE

AFIIA is governed by the Governing Council (GC) which is elected by the IIA member institutes’ Leaders and has 2-year tenure. The GC is composed of 12 members including the chairman, the recent past chairman, Executive Secretary, Treasurer and 8 vice chairmen representing three large institutes and African regional blocks including Central Africa, East Africa, North Africa, West Africa and Southern Africa. The GC is supported by the Executive Committee (EXCO), Oversight Committees and a Secretariat which is currently hosted by IIA Tanzania.

To be the unified voice of the internal audit profession in Africa.

Mission

To promote the internal audit profession in Africa by building relationships with relevant stakeholders, providing platforms for collaboration, providing support to member institutes and assist in ensuring the growth of the local institutes in each of the African countries.

To assist in the development of strong, well-recognised and self-sufficient institutes, under the IIA banner, in each of the countries on the continent
To promote Internal audit to be recognised as an indispensable profession by key stakeholders on the continent
To facilitate collaboration and joint projects among member institutes that would benefit all African IIA institutes

World Class Events & Interactions

AFIIA brings the world of internal audit profession to Africa through events that attract world class speakers and provide learning and networking opportunities for participants. The events currently being organized by AFIIA include Annual Conferences, Governance Forums, Hands on Workshops (University), African Leadership Workshops – for institute leaders/elected officers, CEO’s and Administrators’ Workshops and Webinars.

Generative Professional Intelligence

AFIIA offers generative and value adding professional intelligence to various groups of stakeholders on internal audit profession in Africa. Envisaged professional intelligence includes information sharing about professional best practices emanating from Africa such as adoption of IPPF in various countries and enactment of internal audit laws that embed the IPPF requirements.

Sustainable Mentorship

AFIIA nurtures existing and emerging institutes of internal auditors in Africa by developing essential knowledge, skills and competencies in strategic management, administration and by resolving apparent and/or emerging governance related conflicts.

Purposeful & Innovative Partnerships

AFIIA seeks to highlight the growing relevance of partnerships and relationships with stakeholders purposely structured to bring out the best in AFIIA leading to value-driven implementable activities and engagements.
